As Valentine’s Day is approaching and the semi-finals of cuffing season are upon us, I thought we could look back on the heart-throbs that made the world reevaluate their stock market boyfriends. Kate Moss and Johnny Depp, Pamela Andersen and Tommy Lee, Britney and Justin, Brad and Jenn, David and Victoria Beckham - icons of love in the 90s and early 2000s. They crashed and burned as quickly as they started but that doesn’t mean they didn’t captivate all of pop culture for the 3 years they were on the cover of People Magazine.
Johnny Depp and Kate Moss met in a New York café after his split with dark and ominous Winona Ryder. Their four-year relationship was flashy and sexy filled with diamond necklaces, champagne-filled bathtubs, and cigarettes. Their extremely public displays of affection with tangled legs left nothing to the imagination. The dreamy couple ended in a nightmare. Years later Kate told People magazine, “There’s nobody that’s ever really been able to take care of me. Johnny did for a bit. I believed what he said. Like if I said, ‘What do I do?’ He’d tell me. And that’s what I missed when I left. I really lost that gauge of somebody I could trust. Nightmare. Years and years of crying. Oh, the tears!” The mark they left on grunge and glamour is as permanent as Johnny Depp’s ‘Winona Forever’ tattoo.
Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee - the original MGK and Megan Fox. The Baywatch, Playboy babe and Mötley Crüe drummer met on New Years Eve in ‘94. He traded the groupies for America’s sex symbol and six weeks later they were married. Instead of wedding bands they opted for tattoos. His name on her ring finger and her name on his glizzy - the romance is palpable. They were married for 3 short fiery years that probably ended with a few holes in the drywall from Tommy.
Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake - Mr. & Ms. Denim Couture. This relationship had the same energy as Selena and Justin circa 2011. The it-girl of the moment dating a boy who claims he sings R&B, it all felt so innocent and sweet. We now have them to thank for the hot couples’ costume that every sorority girl busts out at least once.
They met in ‘94, the same time our beloved, sex-crazed couple Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee met. Jennifer Aniston said her friends were worried Brad Pitt would end up being a “conceited fuck” but he ended up being “the best person.” I’d like to ask her though - did she catch a glimpse of that attitude when he jumped on stage in the middle of a Sting concert to show off her engagement ring? They were everything to the tabloids and red carpets for years until Angelina Jolie waltzed on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith with her perfect, godforsaken lips. After the split, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie graced W magazine putting their relationship on display in a full spread. I’d like to think Jen was rushing down the streets of New York and passed a newsstand only to be stopped in her tracks by Bradgelina’s cover and thought - that conceited fuck.
Posh and Becks have been keeping the streetwear heads fed for years with their NY Yankee hats and North Face puffers. They’re our only 90s couple that has lasted through the years. With four kids, $1B net worth, 1 Olympic Spice Girls performances, and one royal wedding attendance under their belt I think we’d agree Posh and Becks know how to secure the bag and mind their business.
I don’t feel right charging you for this content because money creates expectations and we’re both here out of pure enjoyment - right? But, if you liked what you read today and would like to pay me for my work, you can venmo me @shelby-hull. xo
